If any customer would actually be willing to pay the over $1000 cost of an iPhone than I'm sure the Wireless providers would offer it without terms. The issue in Canada is the country got spoiled by a overly compative wireless market that resulted in the perception that cell phones are free or cheap to make and nothing could be further from the truth. You can not make a cell phone for less than a hundred dollars. The issue with prior over subsity on handset pricing is now no one is willing to pay the hundreds of dollars that the phones cost. Now the wireless providers are stuck with the situation as no company could lead the way to elimated terms because they would be shut out of the market right away by all the customers expecting things for free. The carriers like Solo and Virgin have tried this, but customer's balk at the phone costs.
Here is my rant, nothing is free! Rogers this year spent hundreds of millions of dollars to buy wireless spectrum this year to support the data that iPhone require. Guess who needs to pay for the cost of that government tax on the air waves? The customer! Every US company that offered unlimited data in the US got slammed with network congestion and massive problems. Rogers actually got the iPhone launch in Canada right and avoid all of the problems that occured in the US. Funny how no one gives credit when things go right?
