Cancellation fees are pretty standard with cellphone providers.  Also, they don't really have to provide you with a "signed contract", seeing as many transactions take place over the phone or online.  If you signed up on the phone or online, then you either checked a box or said "yes" at the right time that makes you legally bound to all of their terms and conditions, which are readily available.  It doesn't matter if you didn't care to read them or not.  Also, keep in mind that they're not just asking money for nothing.  I'm sure you didn't pay full retail price for your iPhone, which is $600-$800 in the US and probably more in Canada.  You probably paid $200-$300, which is a discounted price granted on the condition that you agree to a 2-3 year contract.  You don't finish that contract, and they have a full right to revoke that discount.
