I bought an iPhone for my son for Christmas through eBay. The phone was brand new and there was no contract with any phone company. Unfortunately, the phone was locked with Rogers listed as the carrier. As I live in a small village in Spain, Europe, there is no way I can use Rogers as a carrier. Here is what Rogers answered when I (on Apple's advice) asked them to unlock my phone; "Dear Eivind Gilje,
Rogers? policy is not to unlock phones. Locking devices
is a common practice among Canadian carriers for a number of reasons. One is
that by locking devices to the network, carriers can ensure the quality of
service/features/benefits offered to their customers over the network.
The other reason is that Canadian wireless carriers
heavily subsidize handsets so that customers can purchase at greatly reduced
price.
Unfortunately we are unable to unlock Rogers Wireless
phones at any cost.
Thank you for contacting Rogers.

Rogers Online Customer Service"Maybe, Tony, when you sit down to your turkey at Christmas, you should think of a little boy in a small village in Spain who's father's pension money went to a present rendered useless by a big company he has never heard of and a pathetic little man unable to take his own decisions. We in Europe call this theft. Happy Christmas Toni.
