I've been on the brink of getting an iphone the last few days the oh-we're-so-blessed-to-have-a-30$-for-6GB data plan period (expired September 30th). Yes, i can afford it, and i think the iphone is a really good device, despite some flaws and annoyances. I would have jumped on such a device under any normal circumstances but... 3 years isn't normal to me. At all.
-3 years is a loooong time to be tied to a phone company, even more so in a market where there is so little competition such as ours. Bargaining or the threat of me leaving as a client is often the only leverage i have. -3 years is a loooong time to be stuck in a contract and conditions can change -There will likely be a significant iphone upgrade during that time. And what would i have to do? Get into a new three year contract? Are you insane? -iphone battery is non user replacable, and apparently, may very well have to be replaced within that three year window. -Faithful to a phone company for three years? Technology moves too fast to be stuck in there three years.
I love technology and tools that can make me more productive / connected. In the days of "a phone is a phone", you could expect to not see any significant upgrade in three years to justify getting a brand new phone. But in this new battle for productivity tool (phone, mp3 & pda features), brand new offering from the google android platform or whatever other company help move the technology forward.
I can only hope that we get better rules to encourage competition in this country or that Apple may pressure Rogers to help move more devices (ok, i can dream can't i?).
I'd get one in a heatbeat if conditions were similar to the US. 1 1/2 to maybe even 2 years, with the 30$/6GB would be a reasonable offer. But not under the current deal, i have to pass. Hourray for me, i've actually made a rational buying decision! Not that i would pretend that it's irrational to get one, if you got one, good for you. I just cannot bring myself to buy one and send the message that status quo is ok or that offering us a temporary three-month deal somehow magically fixes everything.
Sorry, i think i needed to get this off my chest. :-) Wooo, feel better already.
Thanks for getting this set up and good luck in your (our) effort to have our voices heard.
