When the iPhone was released I was thrilled. Great! I would buy this on the first or second day and since were I live the population isn't very big so there weren't any lines. I walked in the Newmarket Rogers Wireless store in Newmarket and asked for an iPhone with a basic MY5 plan. I told my self I wouldn't use the internet unless its Wi-Fi and i even hide the widgets that used internet onto another home screen.
It's a great thing the iPhone lets you see how much data you've used because soon enough I noticed my data was going up without any use of Safari or any of those internet apps. I called Rogers saying why do I have 10 dollars of data on the first day when I didn't even use the internet. I was lucky I got one of the nice guys. He removed the 10 dollars and blocked the internet (3G and EDGE). Every day I would check the usage. Okbs. Great! But I noticed something that might be robbing me silently. If you turn on Airplane mode then Wi-Fi on and go to Google Maps and push the button on the bottom left it will find your location with it's Skyhook feature that just shows the area you are in and doesn't move since it doesn't have the option to get cell tower data or GPS for assistance so it cant pinpoint you accurately. Now if you turn on Wifi and Airplane mode off so its just connected to Rogers and Wifi it will be able to pinpoint you accurately wherever you move in the network. Now this surprised me because what Apple told me is that the iPhone needs cell tower data to use pinpoint location in maps. How could this be possible since I got data blocked? They told me the iPhone would use Wi-fi to load the maps and cell tower data to locate were you are moving since the iPhone GPS chip isn't as strong as some think. Just be careful. If you are not using a data plan i suggest you stay off of any GPS using features unless your on airplane mode and connected to Wi-Fi. If anyone knows if I am being charged please tell me so by emailing me at zandialex@me.com. Thanks.
