Since there is basically a monopoly on telecom services in Canada, what I did is decided to use my cell phone less, after my contract with Telus ended (and these guy were not treat to deal with either), I went with the Rogers pay as you go, the rate plan is still a rippoff during prime time but the evenings and weekends are 1 cent a minute although prime time is a wopping 39 cents a minute, I learned to stay away from prime time and only go there if I had to, buy the $100 card so its good for 1 year, its been 4 months now and I still have $60 left as for the phone, I went to the bandits at the Pacific Mall and bought a import Sony Ericson K550 phone for $200, I went to the Rogers store and got a pay as you go sim card and off I went, the cell phone companies don’t want you on pay as you go plans especially if you are going to cheap out by changing your talking habits, sure I need a cell phone, but I don’t need one that bad, I would have loved to get an iPhone and I can afford it, but Im not going to pay Rogers for their rippoff rate and contract plans, there are many useful things I could do with the iPhone but hey, Im not cheap and Im not a sucker, as for my cable I dropped it from a Vip package down to basic cable with one specialty channel namely retaining the BBC for world news, the specialty channels were recycling the same stuff over and over then recycled the same shit on the other specialty channels, is there some kind of content problem here or what, most of these channels are run by CanWest and because of that you are getting so many commercials that watching a show or a movie has become unwatchable, to top it off the repetitive annoying brainless commercials, just how many fucking times does CanWest think I can take watching Head and Shoulder shampoo, Proactive zit cream and Swiffer Wet Jet commercials, its to the point of abusing the tv watcher who in order is the customer ,and don’t fall for the crap that all these commercials keep the tv rates down , as for the internet Im on Rogers getting 7 mbit service, I do mostly surfing my interests, Im not a heavy downloader and I don’t get anywhere near the service cap but since Rogers keeps lowering the cap, just out of principal I may go to Tek Savvy for 5 mbit service with 200 gig for $29.95 + taxes add on $10 if you want unlimited.
All in all people there are cheaper ways to do things, the more people who cheap out, the more these telecoms will take notice.
