yup, got the same story about that lovely $400 cancellation fee for the 3 yr plan....so thanks to a poster on here I decided to check out the iPod Touch and i bought it a few days ago!

I was mainly interested in the web browser anyway and the the iPod Touch has everything but the phone/camera/GPS/and of course bluetooth.  You can upload the iPhone 2.0 application from Apple for $10 to get all the cool iPhone features and of course it's WIFI so FREE unlimited internet access in the downtown core and various hotspots all over the GTA!  I have wireless access at home anyway, so let's just say i'm not so much interested in my computer anymore. lol

anyhow moral of the story: 
I get what i want - amazing unlimited web browsing capability with NO data plan -to tide me over til the third generation of the iPhone comes out  (or another viable alternative), all at a cost of $319 for the unit + $10 for iPhone 2.0 application update, NO DATA PLAN & NO 3yr CONTRACT. Hopefully by then there will me more GSM  competitiors in Canada and I will then say BYE BYE to monopolistic consumer gouging predator ROGERS forever!!!

i will be vigilant in supporting Bill C-555 though cuz seriously, WE NEED CHANGE!

You guys are idiots did you even bother to read your contract when you signed up?  Do you even know what a contract is?  You haven't honored it and want out.. they lowered the price of the phone you are using now based on you following through with that contract you signed.  Now you want out of it for free because something cooler comes out?  Get a life. Deal with it!

Ever heard of a "contract"....if you signed the contract without understanding all of the clauses in it, you "deserve" surprises...

if you signed legal papers, do youself a favour and read it before signing it....worst case scenario, you could potentially land up in jail.....

whats wrong with Canadians? are we really that stupid that we are not capable of reading and "understanding" contracts ........if you dont like Rogers terms, go do something about it, complain to Jim Prentice, the CRTC, your local MPP or MP etc dont tuck your tail between your legs and drive home.....do something.

it's not ABOUT the 'contract' dimwits.  i don't want to renege on the deal, but WHY do i have to PAY to 'cancel' the plan (which i had no intention of trying to get out of in the 1st place) just to get a NEW handset for an exorbitant FEE ($400) just to get back into the SAME plan???? (AND buy the phone for more than $199!!)

think about it.

what if i had lost my contracted phone and needed a new one? (cancel the plan and get a new 3yr plan with another phone????)

i can understand if they wanted to charge me for the free phone i received on activation without cancelling my plan (cuz of coure it would be much less than $400 - would make more sense to me)

so to summize:  ROGERS = monopolistic consumer gougers with zero customer loyalty!!!!

I agree. It would be completely different if you simply wanted to cancel your contract all together and leave Rogers, but you just want a new phone. I don't see why Rogers is giving you a hard time.. as you stated, they will actually be making more money from you.

I've said it before and I will say it again. Cancel EVERYTHING with Rogers. Then and only then will we start to see them change their prices AND how they treat people. If everyone did this.. heck even if only 30% of their customers did this, Roger would be forced to change quickly.  Unfortunately this is Canada, where people just quietly complain, and then actually stand in line to buy the iPhone.

So why don't you call and see if you can buy it outright? If you lost the phone you got a discount on thats what you'd have to do.  They aren't going to keep on giving you promotional prices on new phones that come just because you want it. 

and therein lies the problem - they are NOT selling the phone outright without a contract...so the ONLY option to get the iPhone in Canada at present is to get it only on Roger's terms, and they reserve the right to tell you that you CANNOT have one! (unless of course you fork over a whole lotta dough, start a new 3yr contract and oh of course pay more for the phone ---is this fair??)

I figure tho that Apple was prompted - after the 1st launch of the iPhone where ppl were unlocking them and shipping them overseas - to offer the phone only on contract to squash the scalping. plus, Apple probably gets a portion of the monthly fees under the 3 year contract.

Rogers, however, knowing that they are the only GSM game in town took full advantage of the situation by using the iPhone to target mainly 'new subscribers', screw all the current locked in schmucks!

dudes dudes ... just call rogers and tell them ur phone fell in the subway and u cant get to it or it fell off a ferry boat....get a new phone (the iphone ) and pay whatever the difference is ... ofcouse that is if u have insurance on ur old phone ... and sell ur old phone if its not a shitty one...
