HOW is it possible that in this day an age Canadians are getting Financially abused by corporations just to set a few examples: 1. The recent announcement of the iPhone has brought to light an alarming issue that has been happening for years. That is the fact that Canadians have been abused by cellphone providers. How is it possible that rate prices are set so high in one of the worlds leading industrialized nations. Nowadays is granted in most Developed and Third World Countries that once you purchase a cellphone plan it covers the user COAST TO COAST WITH NO ROAMING charges, it also includes Voice Mail, Caller ID and a variety of items that here in Canada the consumer will have to pay an additional fee because those will be considered extra. This comes without mentioning the unlimited data already offered in those countries mentioned above.
2. I am now approaching the automobile industry. Why are Canadians paying $10k-$20k more in vehicles than their US counter parts. The US and Canadian dollar have been near par for well over one year. Yet we keep hearing some newly invented excuses that obviously exclude Foreign Exchange. Such as the US has more population than Canada, ok accepted, lower you prices (compareable to the US) and I can assure you that you sales volumes will increase.
3. Although I never pay interest on my credit cards. Why is it that the standard credit card rate in all of the banks is set to 19%. I mean once again this are subprime interest rates why should a consumer with prime credit rating should be paying these rates. Thankfully for those who pay interest on their cards Capital One Canada seems to be be the Only one offering a card whose interest rate is well below 10% (prime customers only). Yes I know there is plenty of Card companies offering TEASER rates 1%-3% for the first few months but once again they shut right up to 19% the standard even for prime customers. Banks should be offering cards with interest well below 10% for their prime credit rating clients WHITHOUT any additional fees.
Overall Canada is good country but Politians in Ottawa need to be aware of consumer abuse by corporations. At the end of it all is the Government who is at fault. The shouldnt have approved Rogers acquiring Fido, that is just basic anti-trust regulation since they were the only ones on a GSM network. Yet they allowed and basically lending themselves to be the main supporters of a monopoly based economy.
I hope this uproar from the canadian consumer changes the playing field regarding the wireless market in Canada.
