Wow, you people are very emotional about the IPhone. Firstly, I suppose if you depend on Rogers to dictate your phone choice, then YES, it is a luxury phone.
If you actually know a bit about phones (and I do) and have access to the many phones (unlocked) and available from Europe and Asia, you would notice that the IPhone is nothing special.
As far as the price, I change my phone every few months. Each phone I get is usually the newest unlocked phone from overseas. The average price is between $500-800 dollars a phone.
People who complain about Rogers (including myself) are not low income/cheap people. Some people may fit into those categories, but not all. In fact, it is the informed consumer, the one who knows the cell phone industry and the ones who understand the economy, complain. Why do we complain? Simple. We understand what others in other countries, such as the US, pay for their mobile services and wonder why we pay much much more.
Rogers is a monopoly, plain and simple. They charge more because they can. If all you do is think you can get a get a better job and keep paying rediculous service prices, then that is plain ignorance.
To me, the IPhone is a piece of junk. It only has a 2 mega pixel camera, that takes crappy pictures, and cannot even record video. Plus - Itunes is junk too. There are 8-10 mega pixel cell phones coming out soon. 5 Mega pixel phones are out already. All of these phones in my opinion far outclass the IPhone.
Either way, whether you agree or not, that doesn't matter. The point I'm trying to make is the fact that Rogers is charging way too much for their voice/data plans, especially when talking about the IPhone.
I make decent money, have a degree in Computer Science, and don't consider myself cheap, seeing as though I've never bought a phone for less than $500. In fact, my phone currently used right now is the HTC Tytn II, which I paid about $700 for.
So to answer the first poster, yes, we live in Canada and things tend to cost more, but that doesn't mean we are stupid Canadians and are willing to spend all of our hard earned money to make a company like Rogers rich.
So go ahead and buy your IPhone. If that makes you happy, paying rediculous prices for it, then you and Rogers deserve eachother. I for one, refuse to support Rogers until they come to their senses.
And my opinion is an educated one, based on common business sense and principle.
