I was wondering this too.

I went to the Rogers Wireless stand at my local mall and asked the same question. They told me that you can keep your voice plan if you want to, but the $30 300 MB data plan is mandatory.

If I could keep my current voice plan with no data plan at all, I'd be happy - wi-fi is everywhere, anyway. However, this extra BS $30 charge is enough to stop me from buying an iPhone...I'd pay $30 for unlimited though, and no more.

Every1 is getting screwed with the new iphone. In the US you could have bought the iphone 2G without signing up for a Data plan and just used the Wi-Fi connection, but now even in the states you have to sign up at the store for a data plan with AT&T. I called up apple to verify this and the reason is because the price is subsidized.

Even apple has sold itself out to the telephone companies!!! they are all crooks!

Buy the phone second hand (easy enough to buy them online and plenty are still in the original packaging) and just swap your sim card. You'll pay less for the phone and you won't be charged for the data plan.

Thats not true you don't have to have a 30 dollar plan.  The price of the phone is 199.99 8 gig on a 3yr plan that is voice over 30 bucks, its if voice under 30 (which is not very many, lowest is 25 plus some corporate plans are pretty low) then the price ot the 8 gig is 249.99 50 bucks more. Just so you know.. :)

Thats something different with instinct and telus, i have heard that you can just buy a normal voice plan for 30$ and that's it, no need for a data plan, then just add features. Its still sketchy as they haven't evealed pricing as of yet. I emailed them, lets see how they respond.
