Toyota Prius Pricing in the US vs Canada

The high price of gas is hurting everyone. Naturally I, like others have been searching for a fuel efficient vehicle and of course the Toyota Prius was top on the list. I didn't know how big the price difference was until I was telling my brother in law who lives in the US what the monthly payment on a Prius would be and we were trying to figure out if the fuel savings paid off. He couldn't believe the price I quoted and then I found out that they don;t pay close to what we pay for the same vehicle.Check it out online. The Toyota Prius in Canada starts at $27,600 and in the US its $21,500. How long are we going to continue to take this price gauging Canada. We already pay higher income taxes and in double taxes on most goods. Oh and to top it off yes we even pay significantly more in gas. No wonder they are able to have more freedom down there. Here everyone scrapes by because we don't get to keep any money in our pockets. Poor Taste?

All car manufacturers in Canada ripoff Canadians. Toyota Canada only offers the highend Prius at a 20% margin over US (even though the canadian dollar is at or near par). Asked why the difference, we receive the usual excuse e.g. the cost of doing business in Canada. Sooner or later the 'parasitic' employees of companies that resort to this practice will lose their jobs. We could hasten this by buying south of the border or 'targeting' a specific product and refraining from buying it until price parity. I can't feel sorry for any employee who loses their job over this.Get made and don't take it anymore!

if you look at any of the model there is several thousand dollars difference in pricing!!!! They are quick to use the difference to increase the bottom line!! but not so quick to use it to prmote sales! i have not bought a new car yet because of the rip off prices!!!!!

It's funny how all the bandwagon jumping enviro-hippies are all over the Prius like it's the jesus car. The facts are in every major 3rd party test the Prius has not gotten the fuel millage it claims. If you drive a regular car behind a Prius and pace it, the car you're driving will 9 times out of 10 (unless it's rather old) will net you a better fuel consumption number that the Prius. Environmentally speaking, because of its highly specialized parts and the manufacturing of the car is so much more difficult, the car itself is worse for the environment than a Landrover. I'm not even going to address the battery issue. Bottom line is if you want to be environmentally friendly, change the way you drive, NOT the car you drive.

The same gas mileage eh? Try idling for 20 minutes in traffic. And lets see which car uses more gas.. hmm . In continuous driving, the Prius is just a small car engine in a heavy car, but anybody who does city driving knows most of ones trip is waiting, not driving, that's where the Prius shines.

I agree with Matthew Uniac. He is 100% correct same as every "hybrid" out there. It's only a way to make us "feel good" like we're actually doing something for the environment. When actually Hybrids are worse for the environment than regular vehicles. And to address the idling issue... yes a regular vehicle will use more fuel during idling, but it takes more power for the hybrid to get up to city speeds after idling using more gas and not using the battery, while a regular vehicle will use less because it has a larger engine. Plus Hybrids usually cut out at 50km's... what speed limit is under 50km's besides a school or playground zone. There is no win when driving a hybrid!

I think that cars should stop being used to travel short distances, I am not saying everyone right now, stop using your car, but try and use it less, Hybrids are not the way to go, the batteries produce more toxins that are harmful to the environment than gas does, it just saves you a few bucks (maybe) at the gas station. also, to my understanding Canadian cars are winterized, that is one of the added costs to buying cars in Canada. this could be false information on my part. All in all, I am riding my bike more often than I am driving. Hopefully this gas pricing will help in North America's obesity problem by making people be more active in not using cars.

Pass your complaints along to those Americans who pay less taxes, but do not maintain and monitor their health because it costs too much, often leading to premature deaths because of late detection of disease.

We have become a country of consumers what we buy and drive is erelovent, the problem is autos ar not the only items being sold in Canada everything is coming from China for not even a fair price, the manufacturere are making a killing all the while the Canadians are loosing more and more, our children when they finish educating themselves will be the most intelengent waitresses in the world working at Mickey d's it is not just cars it is everything we charish, Oh and lastly a word of warning to anyone who understands what is going on in the world in the next few weeks America is going bankrupt the last financial fall is going to look like a party the Chinese wont be there this time with another 4 trillion bailout dollars. George Bush will one day go dawn as the man who killed America.
